This is an Endless Pool that is made for people but modified into a concrete pool enclosure designed for canine hydrotherapy. It has a variable speed current down the middle of the pool. The swim current is generated by a 16" propeller inside a protective case that is driven by a hydraulic motor. I built my own exercise pool because swimming is such great exercise for dogs and they love to swim even more then eat.
Swimming offers non-shock range of motion exercise that helps mobility and builds muscle strength. With any health issue you should ask your veterinarian before starting something new. If you can find a local Canine Hydrotherapist, he or she could offer you better advice then probably most vets.
With dogs that naturally want to swim the problem becomes how to keep them out of the water. Dogs that fear water usually have had a bad experience with water caused by the human factor in their past. By gradual introduction to shallow water, infinite patience, and treat rewards, any dog can learn to like swimming. Obedience training for any dog is advised and for a GSD, I feel, it is a must. Our dogs were obeying WAIT, then called into the pool one dog at a time in the beginning of this video.
