Eric and Giz are amazing. Buddy Rich, wow!

Ive seen him use the match grip hundreds of times in concert. He used to start Channel One Suite using the match grip.
You need to watch the vids from the 40's...BR was a true innovator of match grip from the early Shaw and Dorsey years...Jungle drums man...check out Quiet Please...

As you say B was playing match grip way back then with A.Shaw etc. That clip of him playing 'quiet please' is off the planet stuff, quite unbelievable, his power, speed around the kit, both hands same strength, ideas, swinging relentlessly.Totally different to what we think of him do later in his career

interesting observation-BR doing part of his solo using match grip (4:50). Very out of character.

That's right, although buddy could play Tradiosnal/matchgrip.if you check him out with artie shaw you will see he is playing matchgrip on the floor toms, and that was 1939.i once seen him messing around playing with gloves on at ronnie scotts back in the late seventies.

Steve Marcus is great on sax but Don Menza outperforms him imho. How often did Buddy play with Menza?

Looking through my albums it looks like he played on the 1968 album Mercy,Mercy, & that's it.Pat LaBarbara replaced him on the 1969 album Buddy & Soul.Menza played on loads of Louie Bellson albums though.i have him fronting the WDR Big Band & will upload soon
