Matthijs Vermeulen (born Matheas Christianus Franciscus van der Meulen) (February 8, 1888, Helmond July 26, 1967, Laren), was a Dutch composer and music journalist.

"On ne passe pas" is a poem by Victor le Jeune (Elisabeth Diepenbrock-de Jong van Beek en Donk), a "soldier at the front": "The Belgian will die, die or live, purely for the love of his King. The army is steadfast, they will not pass". The signal or fanfare-like motives in the piano accompaniment naturally follow the heroic immovability of the text, but at the same time they are characteristic of Vermeulen's style - they are to be found to the same extent, for instance, in Symphony no. 1, written not long before in 1914.

Dicte seule l'inexorable Loi.
Mais dans l'horreur de cette bataille,
Le peuple vit en son grand Roi.

L'Yser est là,
On ne passe pas!
