Asbestos, once used as an insulator on ships to prevent on-board fires, has been banned from heavy use because it causes pleural diseases and the asbestos cancer mesothelioma. Those who worked on ships in the middle of the twentieth century including members of the U.S. Navy, which mandated the use of asbestos insulation on its ships find themselves at a greater risk for mesothelioma than most others.
