Rape had a different definition back in those days than it does now.

It is believed by some scholars He was originally worshiped as the fertile aspect of all waters.

Rape isn't uncommon with Greek gods, but the rape of Medusa is interesting given the background. Poseidon and Athena had some bad blood between them of course. One of Athena's major characteristics was her virginity, so Poseidon raping Medusa in Athena's temple may have also been meant as a strike at Athena. Athena is said to have had to cover her virgin eyes so as not to see Poseidon's violation, which suggests that it may have been an act of force against both Athena as well as Medusa.

Some books I recommend are the two I'm using to learn about the Gods and Goddesses.
Mythology :an encyclopedia of gods and legends from ancient Greece and Rome, the Celts and the Norselands by Arthur Cotterell
and
Magick of the Gods and Goddesses by D.J. Conway

I have the same problem you do but since I'm a guy it's vice-verse. It's easier for me to connect to gods then goddesses.
I think it's due to not understanding the opposite gender and I think this 12 Gods and Goddess project is a great way to understand the Gods. One thing I suggest is that you try to do most of your research from books rather then the internet

Here in Gothenburg, Sweden, we've got a big fountain with Poseidon in the center of the city (You can google "Poseidon Gothenburg" if you'd like to see pictures of the fountain. It's quite nice!). He's like the icon of this city. When I was a child I jumped into the fountain and bathed in the water because I thought it was so hot outside that day. Haha! Since that day I've had a bit of a special connection with Poseidon. He's really a kind but very masculine god, I feel.

I was watching Percy Jackson, and I was doing some Medusa research, and the line "I used to date your daddy" came up towards Percy, who is son of Poseidon. At the same time, I came along a line in one where it said Medusa desecrated Athena's temple by laying with Poseidon. You said that he may've carried her off, and the term rape was used, and that line made me think that is what the rape myth meant. I thought I'd share that with you.
I really liked this video, I am a Hellenist and a devotee of Poseidon, Amphitrite and their children. I think it's interesting to note the loving relationship they had with one another. She rarely (if ever) displayed jealousy and was often loving towards his children by other women. Olivia a great site to use for your project if you focus on other Hellenic Gods is Theoi (.com) If you go to the Cult title section, that's how the Ancients worshiped the Gods.

I think you did a great job with this! Even if some Hellenists don't believe the myths to be true I still think its important to learn and share that knowledge. There's a lot to learn from those myths. Great job! I have always loved your videos no matter where my spiritual journey takes me

Also in the Myth of Posiedon's rape of Medusa, I have some insight gained from a small group working with her. Its thought that Medusa was a foreign Goddess and also the mother of Athena. She was a protectress of sacred womens rites such as sex, menstration and childbirth. Her image was made to frighten away men from her temples. It is thought that Greek myth rewrote her history, disempowering her through rape and then demonising her by her own daughter rewritten as the child of Zeus.

@MotherMoon333 Unfortunately I did not have time to learn about Medusa, which I would have liked to so I did not venture far in learning about their relationship and her role. I just read over myths of the 'rape'. x
