Every night Pinky tries to get some sleep, only to be kept awake by a bizarre school building slideshow. Words by Ivan Illich, author of Deschooling Society.

  • We go on learning our entire lives. Even at death, we learn what happens afterwards. It never ceases. In indigenous cultures, the youth learned from the elders. In western society, we are vied against each other in an "everyone for their self" teaching rather than being interdependent as important pieces of our communities, rather than being inspired to support each other's inherent gifts .

  • I'm 40 and I still have a recurring nightmare about being at school and not being allowed to leave even though I'm a grown up.

    The damage runs deep.

  • @labellavita116 Me too. It led me to read Ivan Illich' books, as well.

  • As a homeschooler, I watch this video periodically as a detox from the public school mindset that I work very hard to NOT bring into my home. Love it, love it.

  • Holy Cow! I just got a flashback from one of the pictures of the schools. And not a good one either...school (or rather after school) is Mind Control.

  • I have to say, this video is really mind blowing.. and opens my eyes

With English being my second language, I am surprised that when I think back, I learned this language when I was 3 - 4 by reading Peter and Jane's book. The kindergarten barely helped anything at all. Plus, I learned touse the computer by watching others use it. And now they're teaching at school everything I know. Amazing... Really.

  • The two things about this video that get to me the most: the phrase "artifact people" and that image of Pinky alone in the numbered chairs in that huge auditorium.

  • This video was what first piqued my interest in The Pinky Show .... I've worked in public schools for 10 years, in particular with special needs children. It's so odd the way that your mood and your feelings of effectiveness as a teacher change from day to day. I understand why so many teachers, administrators, parents and students alike get burnt out so fast.

  • @ion010101 Funnily enough, I learned spelling and grammar from observing people on internet forums. I once told my sister that I know more about the human mind than some psychologists. She then laughed and said that I was being stupid and that you have to go to college first to be good at it. :/

Do people not know of independent research? The internet is much more varied than some old, run-of-the-mill textbook.

  • @NWhy1994 Did you learn sentence construction, spelling, grammar and reading comprehension in school?

  • Well I don't think school is the problem. I think it's more the student. If you want to learn and be there, then you'll love it, but if you don't want to be there and just want to go play a video game then, well, your out of luck. I think also the teachers are part of a student's learning because if you have a bad teacher then, you probably won't learn anything. I like school. I look forward to it everyday..
