"African Dance": The Doundoumba is a family of rhythms and dance popular all throughout Guinee. It originally comes from the Hamanah region, of the Kouroussa area. It is the " rhythm of the strong man ". In traditional times it was played to settle disputes among the men of the village. The two in conflict would dance the Doundoumba , in the Bara among the villiage people. This would insure the safety of the competition which lasts from dusk to dawn.

  • What is the sequence at aprx 3.20 with the man (with stomach of a pregnant woman) holding up a video camera made of a plastic jug? It looks like a mock camera! Could it really be? An object made to look like a camera - for the sake of imitation and the filming ritual? Or is it perhaps a real camera, or somthing else completely? Is he a jester? I really hope you can tell me, Michael, and thanks for a great video!

  • Hi,

The dancers you speak of are "clowns", (just like western) and are mocking the foreigners who come to events, (Like myself) and excitedly film them! The cameras are made out of found items and are of course not real! Hope this helps..

  • You saved my day, Michael!

  • classic GREAT Video!

  • i know right, right at home!!!

  • Very interesting...!

How did you feel when mocked?

I used to have a voyeur problem when in Africa, so I think I would have been ashamed. But perhaps not now.

I thought first about something much sadder, copies of rifles that were made long ago in Congo, they looked like guns but were useless. supposedly charged with qualities, but in realty useless. Also to be pointed at white people.

    Thanks for you answer.

    /Jan
