How do you know hygeine / infection wasn't an issue? You think he just went over there and they started doing circumcisions for the heck of it? Infection would cause them to lose a lot more than their foreskin - even possibly their lives. "old enough to analyze it critically". That doesn't make sense.
A male's not at risk of STDs until he's old enough to decide for himself if he wants his penis to be mutilated or not. Simply wearing a condom works better than genital mutilation at reducing STD transmission. For good hygiene, use soap and water; for infection, use antibiotics. The medical benefits of genital mutilation are negligible, if not completely null, and in any case do not outweigh the benefit of not having someone else decide to have your penis mutilated for you.
