What is an opportunity? Most of the time it is an unexpected event --positive or even negative sometimes -- that instantly creates a new window of opportunity. That is why most of the key opportunities in life can be structured around three kinds of very basic events: 1) ENCOUNTERS Making the right encounters, meeting the right person at the right time 2) TERRITORIES Addressing the right issues, exploring the right territories (not only from a geographical point of view) the relevant areas of culture, knowledge, or spirituality 3) DEMANDS Listening to the environment and being ready to answer any kind of demand, sometimes explicit, sometimes hidden. People are asking for things, markets are asking for things, the world is full of demands waiting to be perceived and addressed. But is it possible to influence that ? How is it possible to develop a "lucky attitude" in life? I would like to propose four basic principles, very simple, so obvious that I am convinced that you already know them. 1) The first principle is ATTENTION, alertness, awareness Luck hates routine and systems, but luck definitely loves curiosity and openness. Keep yourself aware of what is happening all around. Listen, watch, try to catch any kind of evidence that there is somewhere a new window of opportunity. This window is open for many people, but very few perceive it. It is not a question of intelligence, of academic background. It is mainly a question of sensitivity, of feeling. 2) The second principle is CONNECTION. Luck hates loneliness. It is impossible to be lucky alone. Being lucky in a recurrent mood means interacting, communicating with others, and most of the time without any particular reason, just to connect and put together your ideas, concerns and feelings. Networking doesn't mean only doing or asking a favour. It is not only a question of filling up your "address book". It is a question of connection. The lucky person is creating connections between others. The best way to reach your objectives is to help the persons you need to reach their own!! 3) The third principle is RECYCLING; I mean "misfortune recycling". Guess what? Luck loves misfortune! Actually, a normal life, even for lucky persons, is full of bad luck, accidents, failure, drawbacks, etc. But the big difference is that the lucky person considers these events as a sort of "raw material" in order to bounce back. In other words, failure and drawbacks are also windows, even if not so obvious, for opportunity.
Remember: luck is not to be found in what happens, but in what you make of what happens! 4) The fourth and last principle is INTENTION, I mean anticipating, preparing and programming yourself, from inside, with the right purpose, goal, ambition or dream. Luck dynamics works like a very sophisticated and powerful missile, equipped with a strong mental "target-finder", called goal, objective, expectation, dream etc. In other words, luck always happens when preparation and attention meets opportunity. In conclusion, I should say that luck is of course a key element for success and happiness in life and business. But luck is not a gift; it's a real psycho-social ability, an aptitude that can be developed. Improving one's luck dynamic requires two things: 1) to practice a new way of watching, perceiving the reality all around. 2) To manage one's life priorities and life choices - towards oneself as well as towards others - in terms of "value creation". In other words, the first and very best way to create opportunity is TO BE ONE for the people you like! And guess what -- and this is probably the most important secret of all - before trying to be luckier, first try to be a source of luck for someone else. And after that -- but only after - wait for the next encounter, the next territory, the next demand. In other words, wait for the next opportunity to come back to you!
