The beginning of the Rain-Retreat
is the day Buddhist monks resolve that
they will remain in the temple
for 3 months as decreed by the Lord Buddha
Starting from the 1st of the 8th waning moon
until the 15th day of the 11th waxing moon
and will not stay overnight anywhere else
unless it is absolutely necessary.

Buddhist monks that practice righteousness
remain in the temple during the Rains-Retreat
to observe the Precepts, practics meditation and
insight by seeking the Dhammakaya within them.
The Lord Buddha taught them not to be careless
but to keep their minds at the center of their beings
and focused on the Dhammakaya within them
This is the way that leads to Rmancipation

Get up early to offer food as alms to monks
Don't miss it even for a day.
Observe the Precepts and practice meditation
Observe the Eight Precepts on Holy Days
Stay away from all causes of ruins
Keep your mind firmly on Nibbana

do your best to accumulate merit and
offer it as homage to the Lord Buddha

Rains Retreat, is the traditional retreat during the rainy season lasting for three lunar months from July to October. During this time Buddhist monks remain in a single place, generally in their temples. In some monasteries, monks dedicate the Vassa to intensive meditation practice. During Vassa, many Buddhist lay people reinvigorate their spiritual training and adopt more ascetic practices, such as giving up meat, alcohol, or smoking (Vassa is sometimes known as "Buddhist Lent"). And in countries such as Thailand, the laity will often take monastic vows for the Vassa period and then return to lay life. Commonly, the number of years a monk has spent in monastic life is expressed by counting up the number of Vassas he has observed.

  • So peaceful and purifying!

  • There are 3 most important holidays in Buddhism:

    1. The Buddha day is the Vesak Day (the full moon day of May). The day He was born, Enlightenment & Mahaparinibbana.

    2. The Dhammma day is the 1st day of Vassa season (the full moon of July). The Lord Buddha gave the 1st sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana sutta to the five hermits at Isipattana, Sarnat in Benares.

    3. The Sangha day is this Magha Puja day. At Veluvanna Vihara, the Buddha gave Ovadha Patimokha, the summery of His Teaching.
