Local Portland activists held a large rally to stop the ICE immigration holds
that are now enforced by not only Portland, but cities and states nationwide.
This early rally was held at the Multnomah Building in southeast Portland,
the hub of operations for the Multnomah County Sheriffs Office and over 70
people were present with no presence of the mainstream media. Multiple
Organizers with AFSC, Causa, Dream Activists, ACT, Portland Jobs With
Justice, and VOZ (A latino/hispanic immigrant workers' rights organization)
led the event and gave great speeches of how deportations stem from
innocent situations and deeply affect families of those deported. A dele-
gation of citizens entered the building and made their mission known as
they traveled upstairs and into the office of Sheriff Daniel Staton, where
they question a staff member which stated that Staton was in meetings
and unavailable all day. The delegation then proceeded to request a
representative to deliver a message and letter to, and the MCSO
"Business Relations Deputy" aquiesced to the demand and heard
them as well as told them that he will deliver the letter. A response
from Sheriff Staton is now pending and remains to be addressed.
