This is my version of Folsom Prison Blues, played with TIM fingerpicks and ring fingernailpick on open tuned tenor banjo.

First verse is played by frailing (clawhammer) pattern.
More info is at http://banjosessions.com/?p=86

Second verse is played by pinch-frail pattern.
More info is at http://archive.banjosessions.com/feb10/patek.html

Following two verses are played by Travis picking pattern.
Thumb should alternate root-root-fifth-fifth of the chord.
More info about Travis picking on tenor banjo is at:

  • what does DGdg mean?

  • @bodorynboy DGdg is the tuning of my banjo, starting from the thickest string.

The common tuning of tenor banjo is CGda and my thickest (4th) string is raised by two semitones from "C" to "D" - it causes no harm to it; my thinnest (1st) string is dropped by two semitones from "a" to "g". The result is DGdg tuning which has the same open strings as open G tuning of 5-string banjo gDGBd (with exception of B string).

  • I'm learning tenor banjo to play in a trad jazz band, and its exciting to see that I can try out some bluegrass fingerpicking without getting a new instrument! Good work!

  • Amazing ! Very nice.

  • Nice :)

  • Goodness, this is just so catchy! Well played, picker!
