I'm going to post another "Why Does Everyone Have to Compare" comment, because I think it's entirely futile. Each actress to sing this in a major production approached it from a completely different place under different directors, while you can say you enjoy one better than the other, I lost interest a long time ago in trying to argue whom is better on any song. I happen to think they each are interesting and beautiful in their own right. Except that disco version Liza did, that's cray-cray.

Why does it always have to be "better than" someone else? Why can't it just exist as it is?

Dorothy embodies who Sally IS. You watch the Frost interview with her- her appearance is that of an mature, past her prime woman, but her demeanor is child like, with a sense of fun. That is who Sally is. Bernadette Peters was entirely too glamorous for the role. She has prevented herself from aging using God knows what means. This is no knock on Peters talents- she is excellent, but she just isn't Sally. No one can ever play it like Dorothy Collins. Actors like her don't exist anymore.

You know who sounds and looks ridiculous doing this song? Michael Ball.

Bernadette was dreadful in the role, absolutely miscast. The kewpie doll voice grated on my last nerve, and I'm a Bernadette fan. The best version of this is Barbara Cook. Her voice is flawless, but DC does a lovely job here.

As Bob Avian said in the Dancer's Over 40, A Joyful Noise, Michael Bennett tribute, "Dorothy had it in the pocket".

I've seen all the versions, and this still best hands down.

I LOVE this. I didn't know there was any live footage of her singing this anywhere. Honestly, I'm not comparing, but I think she does it best because it's very much in her bones, if you understand what I mean. And, being the original Sally helps too, because she created her. Don't get me wrong, I've always loved Bernadette Peters, but I just think Dorothy has this to a tee.

Dorothy Collins - I remember being stunned by her singing the original in the early 70s. Seeing this visual now is terrific. Think of Mad Men and Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven - that's the 'perfect American wife' - here ripping out her insides over frustrated love. I think it takes hearing a lot of different versions (and being older) to appreciate the perfect match of Collins/hair/clothes - and the words. (And I didn't like the Marin Mazzie - got the feeling she felt overwhelmed)
