  • Thanks for posting. Crazy how much misdirected anger this guy gets.

  • Yes, it's amazing...

  • Thanks for watching. I'll post some more Babbitt for you soon.

  • All the vitriol's about that published essay he wrote that was subversively re-titled "Who cares if you listen?" by his editors without his permission. To this day, everyone's perception of Babbitt is coloured by his allegedly avowed disregard for the listener, which is of course completely false.

However, if one actually listens to the music, one hears the voice of a genius.

  • Even a genius contracts food poisoning occasionally and pukes, accompanied with various appropriate-to-the-occasion, sonic products. This is one of the most odious!!!

A waste of ones and zeros at YouTube's memory banks: never again!!

  • I love this piece. Those who diss it, and music even remotely like it, have no sense of musical 'space'. I lament for them.

  • I don't think he's writing either AGAINST nor IRRESPECTIVE of the listener: he's writing what wants to hear and leaving it open to the listener (and indeed history) to judge whether or not it's worthwhile. I certainly don't get the sense that he doesn't CARE about his audience: just that he's not going to pander to their preconceptions about music and what it "should" or "shouldn't" be. Food for thought...

  • yes, please continue posting more Babbitt! his best work (eg.piano concerto, solo requiem and much of the solo piano music) is among the most invigorating of the 20/21st Century.

  • How about something interesting like Jonathan Harvey or Julian Anderson - something along those lines? This guy is really an old-school bore, and not even a good one at that.
