I'd already ridden him for half an hour before this all started, and at the time I didn't have a clue what set him off, but I think I might be able to hear the skidder coming down off the hill behind the indoor and that may have been it. He'd been a bit tippytoed, which I thought was because we'd been working on more energy, but now I think maybe he'd been getting worked up? I've been trying to make it a habit to get off when he starts to get worked up, and at first I wasn't going to and then reminded myself that if I came off it was going to be really hard to get back on again, and especially if I couldn't figure out why he reacted the way he did! And since I didn't have a clue what he was reacting to, I got off.
I would consider gas colic! Or gas pain. I've seen this before with a horse I was having vetted who exploded while we were vetting her. And Sting released a lot of gas early on when he exploded in-hand with you. I know that the activity can cause gas but I do believe that sometimes gas pain can be the cause of activity. Just something to consider anyhoo...

Gas would certainly fit, and is the best explanation of why he went from okay to scared silly to okay all within a 45 minute session!
