  • I actually had one flight in this "Connie" in 59 out of Malta. What struck me most was its huge wings, flapping away as we took off. I was 16.

  • @MrGchiasson I'd give anything to fly in a constellation

  • those props in flight and the shadow are that of a DC-4

  • When I was a little boy, I was a passenger on a Constellation back in 1962..

It was wonderful.. the men wore suits and women dressed up..

It wasn't a 'cattle car' that flying has become today.. it was an adventure.

We have changed a lot in the last fifty years...and not for the better..

  • @baraxor ~ I've been on one of the Columbines @ Wright-Patterson in Dayton, Ohio. It was a Lockheed Connie. I spent well over a quarter century working in the commercial airline industry (4 different carriers including JAL), logged 1,866,496 nautical miles in 36 different A/C and on 42 different airlines to 34 countries and 50 states! I even got in 422,000 nautical miles in B747 jumpseats and 125,000 nautical miles in DC8 jumpseats. Would rather fly than do anything!

  • @MrRonnieG

VIP-type transports such as FDR's "Sacred Cow", Truman's "Independence" and Ike's "Columbine II/III" were designed with the executive compartment in the rear, where there was less vibration from the props. The first VC-137 Air Force Ones also had the POTUS cabin in the rear, but were soon reconfigured when it was found that the jet blast noise was far more noticeable in the back.

  • Back "in the day" coach passengers entered the aircraft from the rear door while 1st class passengers gained entry from the forward door. Interestingly enough, prop airliners were quieter in the coach section where passengers were behind the engines rather than 1st class where passengers were even with, or forward, of the propellers.

  • Beautiful aircraft. I woud like to have travelled on board but I was not yet born. I understand this plane also reached Mexico City and was serioulsly involved in an air collision while flying over Grand Canyon after departing from Los Angeles in 1957. Greetings from MEXICO CITY.

  • was that constellation at the beginning and end of the vid an 049 or a 749? I can't tell the difference between the two. also I've noticed that there were differences in the wing views. that looked to be a DC-4

  • That is one cool looking plane. I like the perfect 1950's Leave it to Beaver nature of the interior shots. Great footage.
