Promoted Hercules Defeats Champion Barcelona 2-0 in Spain's La Liga

Nelson Valdez scored both goals to lead promoted Hercules to a 2-0 win over defending champion Barcelona in Spanish soccer's La Liga.

Valdez, who joined Hercules this summer from Borussia Dortmund, scored in the 26th and 58th minutes at the Nou Camp stadium to hand Barcelona a defeat in just its second game of the season. Barcelona lost just one of 38 games last season en route to its second consecutive league title and was unbeaten in 19 home matches.

Hercules is playing in Spain's top division for the first time since 1997 after finishing runnerup in the second division last season. It lost its season opener at home 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao, while Barcelona won 3-0 at Racing Santander.
