A single AC6000 leads F741 through Fetner, where four brand new Progress Rail-built Number 20 switches lay at the ready, waiting for installation.

The state of North Carolina is funding upgrades to the interlocking at Fetner, which will increase its operational flexibility by replacing both crossovers, moving one of the crossover switches from the outside of a curve to a more traditional alignment. Currently, eastbound Norfolk Southern trains cannot access track 1 because of the danger of a train picking the point on the outside of the curve. This causes many heavy NS trains to stop on the hill west of Cary, waiting for Amtrak or CSX movements coming off of or on to the S-line.
