Pure perfection! What else can one say. She sales this song better than any other performer bar none. She takes you along the lonely journey of finally knowing she can't have the man she loves, as he has moved on and fallen in the love with someone else. Unrequited love must be the loneliest love of all.

This is the definitive performance of Sondheim's masterpiece. Abe Lincoln said it best: "I would give all I have, and go in debt, if I could write something half so fine as this."

I would love to be a part of the pit orchestra for this musical...the clarinet lines in this number are outstanding. I absolutely love Judi Dench's rendition of this; so touching and moving, it truly is indescribable.

@dolbinau Peters is definitely on the list. If you read what Sondheim said after he saw her in the show, it's obvious he was blown away, to put it mildly.

Thanks for posting this. I've not heard the studio recording. It's been out of print for a long time. I'd LOVE to get a copy. I've only seen her do this on a British talk show during the run of this production and it took my breath away. I never fully understood this song until I saw her do it. Check out this clip on YouTube Seriously. You can't take your eyes off her.

I'm just sorry she can't sing in tune. Probably worked better on stage than in audio only.

I grew up only ever having heard Judy Collins sing this. But since Dame Judi Dench's performances I have really "grown up".

There are several other performances of her singing this. To watch her sing Send in the Clowns is a heart wrentching experience. It always blows me away!
Well, just voted the greatest actor of all time.
From Shakespeare to Sondheim she can do anything and make us cry. I love reading the comments made about this song and all the versions and singers, and there must be hundreds. There are only 2 who can sell it, Glynis Johns and Judy Dench, no wonder that Mr Sondheim writes for actors not singers.

@shirtale I think Bernadette Peters can be added to the 'list'.
