This video shows that a vehicle equipped with a wheelchair lift needs two car spaces to allow the person to exit the vehicle. People in wheelchairs need to get out more and interact with the larger community so other people become more aware of the needs of the mobility-impaired.
Charlie Ekizian has had an amazing life. In 1968 he broke his neck in a diving accident and was told he'd be in a nursing home for the rest of his life. He used athletics to regain much of his abilities. He married, finished college, had a successful career and has spent the last forty years inspiring other mobility-impaired people to reach higher goals. Charlie's website is http://www.wheelchairsportsandrecreation.com.
Unfortunately a lot of people just "don't care". Most know what the deal is with ramped vehicle access but all they want is a good parking spot so they can get in the store and do their thing.
Although a few have the capacity to live and learn, many simply do not care even though they know the hardship their illegal parking cause on disabled people.
I certainly agree with educating people, but the sad truth is many could care less because they are just ignorant, selfish people.

I did not realize this until today. I will spread the word. Another thing I have discovered is that the law says to allow 96" for wheelchair lifts but most of them have an average of 62". The lift ramp is about 50". There is no room to drive the wheelchair off the ramp.

Handicapped parking spaces have gotten out of control. 60% of people is this country have no business having a handicapped parking pass. Way too many spaces are being made and not enough are being used. Go to walmart and count the spaces being used vs. the number not being used. Way out of hand.

Not only do people crowd a handicap vehicle, they often park in the handicap spots forcing people in wheelchairs to travel further, negotiating the traffic in busy shopping areas.
