shortly after my 18th birthday, i found out one of our very old vhs recordings that my mum and dad filmed when me and my sis were kids. the video is 16 years old. set in the first half of 1994, i was 18 to 24 months old, and my big sister was 5 years old.
a lot has changed since then. my parents have divorced, my sister and i are now adults, there are new cars, relatives have changed, the garden looks completely different, and the house has been redone. it was like opening a box of memories that had never been opened in my mind.
trawling through nearly 3 hours of footage was a difficult job, but in the video i wanted the most fantastic and relevant shots. for every 1 second of footage i kept, i had to discard 25 seconds. yet it was the motive to finish the video that kept me going.
there is a quote that pablo picasso made which i found very relevant to the development of this project, hence why it is stated right at the end. "all children are artists. the problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." and with reference to my video, it is me and my sister that are the artists. i am simply the editor of the art product sixteen years later.
