Having a job while in school certainly helps pay the bills... but how much do you pay in return? Can you maintain a normal college social life while still making money? I really think the whole "value of work" is getting twisted around so that the work itself has less value for the worker. If work were a choice, then yes, you could learn some valuable lessons from it. But I think some people in power are just using that as an excuse to drive up tuition to basically force college students into the position of needing to work, and rationalizing the "value of work" as an excuse. Same thing with unpaid internships - it's an excuse to get more work for less money.

I hate the assumption that people working in college are only trying to buy booze and other luxury items. I had to pay for prescription meds that cost an insane amount of money out of pocket. I had to work 40 hours and it still was barely enough money. I really regret that I had to half-ass so many classes because I was too busy working.

I wish that people would work on solutions so that students could work less while in school rather than trying to glorify this.

You got lattes thrown at you Anna? Really? How aggressive are Americans? In Norway if someone got angry and threw a latte, or any kind of beverage at somebody that person would be kicked out in a heartbeat and it would be a scandal. It could have something to do with egalitarianism. Here in Norway, you have no right to think yourself better than the server. If you go into a coffee-shop or restaurant and treat the employees like servants you'll be kicked out.

Why do they care about having a social life? Why would you even consider that? That's one of the least important things about life. Worrying about your social life is like worrying about what color your underwear is.

I'm working full time and going to college part time, for the time being. I'd rather study and be a full time student, but I don't have much of a choice. Eventually, I will be a full time student, but my situation cause me to go full time at my job. OH well, at least I'm employed.
