Walther's Law: The distribution of environments represented by rocks in a vertical stratigraphic column is related to the distribution of those environments laterally. You can also see my lecture notes at http://dawnssedstrat.blogspot.com/2011/01/lecture-1-sedimentology-and_03.html

  • Does these principals also apply to the surface processes and landscape evolution? how would it be possible, what sort of interrelated factors affect the formation?

    cheers

  • Walther's law applies to environments with deposition but not to those with erosion because no sediment is left behind. A valley river might deposit sand in the channel and mud and soils in the floodplane. These represent neighboring environments and will be found on top of each other in a vertical section. However, a mountain river that is eroding rock, will not leave behind an unconformity, not sediment, and it removes evidence of previous environments. Walther's law doesn't work.

  • nice way to learn or repeat some basic concepts, thank you.

  • Thanks for watching!

  • Thanks - invaluable to my degree back in UK. Great that you post these online.

  • Thank you so much for sharing that with the public. I'm just an occasional amateur fossil hunter, but find sedimentary geology and its related disciplines to be fascinating subjects. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.

  • Thank yo foe sharing this with us, i now understand Walther's law better

  • i love the system

its helping me understand the topics

    for midterm

  • Thank you so much Dawn!! You did an excellent job of breaking down and explaining this concept with a piece of chalk, blackboard and a 5 minute video, that my dead beat PhD holding stratigraphy prof couldn't do trough out the whole course. Thanks again!

  • My proffessor gave us the link to this vid cuz we are about to write an essay on Walther's law. The visualizatoin definitely helps!

  • How I wish you're my sedimentology lecturer.

Thanks much for the clear & succinct video.

  • thanx very much.. i found it so useful to watch ur videos in order to understand some difficult geological concepts I encountered in my studying materials.. thanx again
