These Military Packouts were accomplished at the Ancient Order of Hibernians Hall in East Islip NY. Various individuals and organizations through out the community came together to supply and pack various commodities for our service men and women stationed in the Mid East.
The sound track is provided and taken from a CD, "Singing Praises To Our Troops", performed by the Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School Chorus Islip New York. (March 2008)
A first time volunteer comments:
Hello.... I hope you take the time to look at the beauty behind this!
My husband and I, along with many of our friends volunteered for an effort that is so heart warming that I had to share it with you.
The effort I speak of is an organization called "FRIENDS OF JASON"( Jason Mulligan). It was start a few years ago by his parents Gerri and Tom. The history is simple... Jason Mulligan is a United States Soldier, battling in Iraq. During Jason time there, his parents would send care packages to him of soaps, socks and snacks; items we here take for granted. Jason loved and looked forward to those care packages but he would comment to his parents that there were many soldiers/ brothers there that never received a care package. He wished more parents would do what his parents did for him. It was shortly after that, that Gerri and Tom started the "FRIENDS OF JASON" organization.
Their goal was to support the soldiers that were fighting for our country. Their goal is to make a difference. To show that we here in the states care and appreciate the work they are doing at a very personal level. Several times through out the year they organize a military pack-out. They receive many donations of toiletries and foods to be pack up and then shipped out to 50-60 of our countries sons and daughters over in Iraq. Each 'Boxed Care' package neatly pack into Ziploc bags containing things like soaps, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, razors, tooth paste, tooth brushes, wash cloth, deodorant, combs, wet ones, socks, books, magazines, a deck of cards, puzzle books, rosary beads, snacks, treats, cookies, crackers, canned cheese, peanut butter, candy bars, crystal light flavoring, etc. Just a few things packed up with the love from a stranger, a stranger that care about them.
I want to say as this was my first time volunteering with the group, that it was a very heart warming event. To know that some one's child will receive a package of simple essentials putting a smile on their face and some excitement in their day, warms my heart. Just knowing that I was one of the hands that took time out in this busy world to show my appreciate is the greatest feeling in the world. It truly brought a tear to my Eye as I watched the effort of so many people come together for that one cause...The Care and Love of Son or Daughter of our Country...
thank you!
