Chancellor of Soul, Mike Boone presents a masterpiece
recording by two giants of music, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, 'Try A Little Tenderness'.
Composed by Jimmy Campbell, Reg Connelly and Harry M. Woods, the song was first recorded by the Ray Noble
Orchesrtra with vocalist Val Rosing in 1932, then later in
1933 by legendary crooner, Bing Crosby.
31 years later, Sam Cooke featured the song as a part of
his live shows for a supper club audience, after hearing
Aretha Frankilin's version on her classic 1962 Columbia
LP, 'The Tender, the Moving, the Swinging Aretha Frankiln'.
Cooke featured 'Try A Little Tenderness' as a medley on
his masterpiece1964 live recording, 'Sam Cooke At The Copa' released a few weeks after his untimely death in
Dec 1964. The medley included 'You Send Me' and 'I Love
You For Sentimental Reasons'.
A year and half later, Otis Redding recorded the song after
hearing Sam Cooke's version on the Copa LP. The Copa
album was Redding's favorite LP.
'Try A Little Tenderness' was issued as a single from
Redding's classic 1966 LP 'The Otis Redding Dictionary Of Soul' on Monday, November 14, 1966 where zoomed to
the No.4 position on Billboard's Top Selling R&B Singles
chart, the week ending, January 21, 1967.
'The Otis Redding Dictionary Of Soul' LP hit No.5 on the
Top Selling R&B LP chart, the week ending January 7, 1967.
The 'Sam Cooke At The Copa' LP hit No.1 for 3 weeks on the Hot LP chart, the week ending February 6, 1965.
