Another great way to protect yourself without taking risk of being allergic to potassium iodide is using Iodine tincture daily on your wrist or neck. This will allow your body to slowly absorb iodine into your thyroid without ingesting something that may make you sick!

i would start with only a quarter teaspoon once a week be sure to eat a fair amount of fiber to offset constipation i would also do a bath with a teaspoon once a week especially on children. it may cause some skin dryness but that minor compared to the benefit!

I take a Kelp exctract.. contains a natural form of iodine.

Also, melatonin & vitamin C can help protect against radiation, though to a limited extent. Given their health benefits however (see wikipedia, to start), and low cost, it doesn't hurt to have each on hand just in case, or to take daily regardless.
