This is a video of a woman that I met while visiting the last remaining synagogue in a once booming Jewish village Berdichev, near Zhitomyr Ukraine. She saw a group of foreigners visiting and invited us to hear her sing the HaTikva, Jerusalem Shel Zahav, and finally this old Russian folk tune which she told us she used to sing to the soldiers going to war in World War II, prior to evacuating to Northern Kazakhstan. She was an opera singer in her professional life, and it shows!
That was a signature song of Klavdia Shulzhenko-- Russian pop (estrada) diva from 1940-to about 1970

This song is called "Siniy platochek"--- blue shawl--- soldier gave a shawl to his girlfriend as he went to war--- it becomes the symbol of love for each other and their country. If you want to hear it, there is a lot out there on the Internet. Music by Jerzy Peterburgsky.
