"Composed especially for the 1980 running of the Kentucky Derby and ABC Sports. Written, recorded, mixed and debuted on national television all in two weeks. Sometimes it's easy." (Dan Fogelberg)
Special thanks to Bobby for Dan's liner notes.
" Run For The Roses " ~ Dan Fogelberg (Lyrics)
Born in the valley and raised in the trees
Of Western Kentucky on wobbly knees
With mama beside you to help you along
You'll soon be a-growing up strong
All the long, lazy mornings in pastures of green
The sun on your withers, the wind in your mane
Could never prepare you for what lies ahead
The run for the roses so red
(Chorus)
And it's run for the roses as fast as you can
Your fate is delivered, your moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined in the dance
It's high time you joined in the dance
From sire to sire, it's born in the blood
The fire of a mare and the strength of a stud
It's breeding and it's training and it's something unknown
That drives you and carries you home
(Chorus)
Dan Fogelberg composed Run For the Roses for 1980 Kentucky Derby. It has since been used as an unofficial theme for the event. The song alludes to "the chance of a lifetime, in a lifetime of chance" at once describing the experience of horse racing, and life itself.
"Run for the Roses" is on the album The Innocent Age (Released 1981), also can be found on Greatest Hits , Greetings From The West , Portrait & The Very Best of Dan Fogelberg albums.

@JMEagle101 Oh, Bill, it is indeed the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance! Every time you upload an Ever On for Dan, I say "That's my favorite ever!", then, another, and "That's my favorite, the one I love most, that Dan ever recorded!" Do you think it might be because all Dan recorded was so ahead of his time, so misunderstood by too many, and understood by the ones who ....... understood?

@SoothesMySoul Dan’s lyrics and melodies have inspired me to come forward to create tribute videos to him after his passing, and I am glad I have done it and accomplished many. May his timeless music and boundless love continue to heal us through the toughest times, bring joy and happiness to you and stays in our hearts for ever on... God bless you always!

At a 85' concert, Dan was touring High Country Snows. I kept thinking not all Blue Grass ! I just knew something was going to be different, when he moved over to the piano. I walked from my 20th row seat, and sat in the middle of the aisle, 3rd row, right in front of him, he played this song. I have never forgot that night ! For the ladies who have never seen him live, he's handsome in photo's, in person....he was gorgeous, and once I came out of my trance, he sounded great too !
