Banka - Meiko Kaji

Banka means "Elegy" or "Funeral Song" and is part of Kaji Meiko's Zenkyokushu Album. The accompanying images are all actual photos of samurai taken at the end of the 19th Century, many by Western photographers to bring back in albums depicting the exotic Orient. With the exception of the opening quotation, all the text comes from Yamamoto Tsunetomo's Hagakure; I thought it appropriate to pair a tribute to the way of the samurai with this particular song because of its sad nature and the ultimate demise of the samurai class with the Meiji era.
