Air Canada Flight 797 was a scheduled trans-border flight that flew on a Dallas/Fort Worth-Toronto-Montreal route. On June 2, 1983(1983-06-02), the aircraft developed an in-flight fire behind the washroom that spread between the outer skin and the inner decor panels, filling the plane with noxious, toxic smoke. The spreading fire also burned through crucial electrical cables that knocked out most of the instrumentation in the cockpit, forcing the plane to divert to an alternate landing field. Ninety seconds after the plane landed and the doors were opened, enough oxygen was available for the fire to flashover, killing the 23 remaining passengers left on board.

  • God helped you but not the others? What a load of bull

  • I'm not pilot, but when you see smoke on a plane, you need to land ASAP. I've seen a lot of these videos where they second guess the seriousness of the situation.

  • @krick0124 But I see your point, they weren't fearless warriors or anything (like Robert Marcus in the crash of Eastern Air Lines Flight 401). I still think they did a good job though :)

  • @krick0124 In my opinion they did do a lot of good. They acted extremely professionally and helped prepare the passengers to exit the plane, even though it wasn't procedure then. I think they did the best they could have.

  • @Pvjinflight ya very true, hadn't realized the whole oxygen thing.

  • @flytheuk That fresh air would only make fire worse.

  • this is why aircraft have vents that can pull all the air out and replace it with fresh air at lower altitudes.

  • someone should have tried to get underneath the floor and look to extinguish the fire, why wait until it gets worse?

  • Well, as long as the flight attendants got their asses off the plane then, what, hoped some passengers would crawl out to safety on their own, I guess it's okay. Can't hate someone for saving their own ass but definitely no heroes among that crew.

  • There seems to be alot of captain hindsight going on in these threads. It's human nature to hesitate when faced with such situations. I'm not sure that the few minutes they did hesitate would have made much difference, really. What I can't believe the airplanes had emergency exits (for YEARS) but they had no emergency lights and passengers and flight attendants were not trained on them. So now I'm playing Doctor Hindsight, oh well. At least the poor people didn't die in vain.

  • @themrchemist123 Ahh, com'on... a few years ago when smoking was allowed, they just could not land a plane because there were smoke coming out of an ashtray... of course they have to make sure about the seriousness of the situation. When they don't, ok... land ASAP !!!

  • It was something that God wanted to do maybe, to teach us that silly mistakes can make BIG Problems and we need to reflect and say 'God help flights that may have problems'
