This was done in 1993 at the Morris Daily Auditorim at San Jose State University. And I still go there; Kim Miller, but not that many people realise anything for a number of years.
WHen I discovered punk rock, I was in elementary school and it was the early 80's. Everything is an aquired taste.
But as time went on, you didnt have to have a mowhawk. A lot of these bands have been around for many years and people still didnt know. The only people who could explaine the appear were PUNKS, but others were ignorant. You show them a dead kennedys video of ON BROADWAY 1984, and they ask "why are those people jumping on each other?" Sonny Barger of the Hells Angels should watch that concert, it seems to make it seem like ALTAMONT could have worked.
The people who didnt know anything about Punk Rock and such have FRIENDS who do. But they NEVER went over to these friends houses. Well Becky McLaughlin Knew/knows (but does she remember?) , but people were shocked to find out I knew her grew up with her, but they didnt come over to her house. They would have heard sounds eminating from her home.
As time went on, all I could hear was "Jello Biafra is UGLY" & "This tape player is cursed" (Henry Rollins Black Flag MY WAR material) in 1986, some of the most signifigant bands broke up: Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, even Crass. Henry Rollins formed the "Rollins Band" (which was NEVER Black Flag, more Fusion/Punk) and continued his spoken word activities.
Very funny that in this day and age, people think of ...ahem....GREEN DAY. WRONG!!! Some of these bands, in various configuration's, still exist today, and it has been over 20 years. But in this day and age, you CAN'T stage dive...!!!!!!
By the time High School for me, it was the beginning of the 1990's. NIRVANA reluctantly invented GRUNGE, K. Cobain DIDN'T WANT TO BE A GENERATION SPOKESPERSON, and as a result of name dropping & promotion, everything else is influenced by PUNK. All these bands keep coming up in conversation!!!
...but when they ran out of 'grunge' bands to sign up, they decided to go after "PUNK BANDS": GREEN DAY (who played a show at my local bowling alley a year before they got signed to a major lable contract), BUTTHOLE SURFERS (who changed music styles) , BAD RELIGION (who 'sold out' before selling out. they have been around since 1980) even the ROLLINS BAND!!!
What I remember is that the ROLLINS BAND was on the first Lollapalooza tour, and everybody who went said that 'Rollins Band Sucks" (I dont believe so) but when ROLLINS BAND gets signed to a major lable (????) , most people said that when the first album MAJOR was done, H. Rollins best friend & roomate Joe COle was murdered pratically in front of Henry Rollins Eyes. Then when the second major lable release was done, the song "LIAR" propelled Henry Rollins into the MTV bin. Thats when everybody knew about him....that way.
But even when Lollapolooza put ROLLINS BAND on the map, NOBODY KNEW ABOUT HIS SPOKEN WORD SHOWS!!! People saw my picture that was done in 1993, and they would go crazy. Even this guy Seth Pearce (who was homophobic towards me & violent) was wanting a copy of this picture. But the ignorance remains:
"How did you get backstage?"
"That is a cardboard cut out."
For a long time many people were impressed. In the space of 11 years, Rollins and I crossed paths 3 times. The 2nd time was not till many years later. We are not 'friends' per say, whenever I do try to talk to him, I seem to say the wrong thing. I could have been on that CD of the San Jose State show. I should have 'cheered' when he mentioned King Crimson. but still you wouldnt believe the following:
GREEN DAY did a show at the Saratoga Lanes Bowling Alley, in my neighborhood. I could have bootlegged the show, next year Major Lable signing. Everybody went DOOKIE crazy.
NO DOUBT did a show at the EDGE nightclub in 1994, opening for the JANITORS AGAINST APARTHEID", they sang a NIRVANA song, among other things, I WAS ON STAGE WITH GWEN!!! I stage dived many times. I was also thrown off the stage. I have thew date of the show, wonder if the show was videotaped.
Got to see SMASHMOUTH many times for free at the Sofa Street fair, should have bootlegged that. numerous times.
Went to high school with Jerry Only's cousin-by-marriage, MISFITS. Didnt believe the guy ...till Jerry Only called me on the phone.
Met Sammytown of FANG numerous times. ect...
Was Pen Pals with Merle Allin, GG ALLINS BROTHER.
ever heard of STIKKY. not only have I met them, but I got a full concert from Merle allin.
