He wanted to reverse the tool for the last edge of the female piece, but simply reversing the piece not the cutter, would do this.

from when this guy was an aprentice now, i bet he is just completly blown away at how advanced machining has become with carbide tools and cnc machines. this guy has been through allot.

Rudy Kouhoupt had been through a lot in his lifetime. He was a navigator on the Enola Gay (after it came back from dropping the H bomb in Japan). He then got a PhD in chemistry and worked in the corporate world until his parents were dying from cancer. He then moved back home and took up machining. He provided regular articles and projects for Popular Mechanics for 10 years (1770 - 1980). After that, he wrote for Home Shop Machinist and Live Steam magazines until his death in 2004.

Sorry to be so slow in replying to your question. No, Rudy didn't make the flywheel for that shaper. It came with the unit. He did, however, build the electrical drive that runs it. He also built several accessories and made many improvements to that old technology.
