This is a long video but shows the complete basic steps for creating an alternator from a standard AC electric motor. There is also some basic safety suggestions and experiences. This Alternator averages 10-21 watts at 400 rpm and 30-40 watts at 800 rpm This also introduces you you a bridge rectifier.

  • Hey if you are getting a 1amp/40v outage is it not possible to rerun it onto the drill? I mean yeah you can get wind fans and solar panels to run this But where are you using the power? If you was to use 1amp/12v on the drill what I believe are drill uses then you will still have a 28v over what you can use to charge a battery or transform into hydrogen ? Please message me with the answer if anyone knows?

  • @fabzcardon The drill is 18v 12+ amps and delivers 200 unit watts and 290 unit watts max. This test is about 20% efficient on this alternator as is. 200 watts in = 37 watts out. The planetary gear in the drill sucks a lot of efficiency out and so does the cheap heavy cogging DC high RPM motors that most cordless drills use.

  • I'd like to hire this guy to do repairs in my house! I got electrocuted yesterday trying to repair my Mother's TV, it's the most painful experience I've had in years!! Oh well, another thing to be paranoid about: Electricity! I'm not touching electric stuff for the rest of my life!!!

  • @paranoidnews Glad you are okay;-) Learn about electricity while avoiding it. My zap came from doing other work and grabbing something that was unrelated to what I was doing. If you know a little, you can fact check a professional install or repair. Smart questions keeps a contractor on their toes. Our death trap was a 100% professional install. It was faulty for years, then zap. So if you do not know electricity, don't mess with it, but learn about being insulated vs grounded:-)

  • Dan,

Great video! Very instructive in the uses of an old ceiling fan.

Question for you though, if you were to make small hollows behind the 1x1/2 magnets to be able to mount two or three 1/2x1/2 magnets, would that make a large enough difference in your output to be worth the effort?

This idea would almost certainly have to be cast in resin for stability, but would you give it a try and post your results?

Please everyone, give thumbs so Dan will see this post.

    Thanks,

  • WOW, you made a wooden rotor:-) World record first I would guess. Of all the videos on the internet explaining how a generators work, this is a clean sweep. GOOD work Dan!

  • Really nice video man. I learned a lot! Thank you so much!

  • Hey - great video - would a single disk magnet, diametrically magnetized work better than multiple bar magnets?

  • The professional that installed that light and conduit was not very professional, the conduit, box, light all should have been bonded and grounded, which would have tripped the breaker if a bare hot wire was touching inside.
