TAVIS Celebrated At School

Oct 07, 2009 - 03:43 PM
York Memorial Collegiate Institute students at the assemblyA west-end school celebrated a dramatic drop in violent crime in their neighbourhood over the summer, along with forging a stronger partnership with police.

York Memorial Collegiate Institute held an assembly on Oct. 7 to deliver an anti-violence message through theatre and dance, and recognize the officers and community members who keep their community safe through the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS).

Over the course of the summer, 32 more officers patrolled the Keele St. and Eglinton Ave. W. area around York Memorial, in an effort to quell the violence that led to eight murders in 12 Division over the first half of the year. Over the summer, there was one murder in 12 Division. There were no murders and one shooting in the Keele-Eglinton neighbourhood officers patrolled.

The community said we are not going to tolerate this in our neighbourhood and, this school said, were not going to tolerate this in our school, TAVIS team leader S/Supt Glenn De Caire told hundreds of York Memorial students. In the first weeks of the summer, police concentrated on establishing calm and order and then focused on finding community partners.

De Caire said the police have developed relationships with community and business leaders, as well as students to make the community safer. The Eglinton Hills Business Association teamed up with police to clean up Coronation Park, after officers helped rid the park of gang and drug activity. The community has reclaimed the park with community BBQs and special events. They plan a hockey rink for the winter.

When we stand together against violence, we will eliminate it from our neighbourhoods, De Caire said.

An identical TAVIS initiative was used in 31 Division.

The Twisted Ankles dance crew and the Mixed Company Theatre entertained students and delivered messages against violence.

York Memorial principal Suzana Greenaway said the school has an 80-year history of working with community partners to make their neighbourhood a better place.

We, as a community, have made a difference to make the city and the world a better place, she said.

The school has 110 school clubs and teams to keep teens busy and out of trouble. One of its most effective means is the Empowered Student Partnership, which sees teachers, students and police work together to deliver initiatives to make their school and community safer.
