Shirogane is mortally wounded during an attack by Honerva and pilots the blue lion for the last time before dying. We are treated to the cutscene of his funeral from the anime and Princess Fala decides to take over his piloting duties.

Also, in the anime, Shirogane sacrifices his life for Kurogane (My least fav character) not Fala.
