Note: I made a new version of this song which I think personally is better, if you go to my channel and click on ner li dakik take 2 you can see the new version.
One of my old teachers taught me this song, which apparently is in Hebrew and is about Hanukka. In the video I am playing guitar and singing the high voice (the melody), and my friend is singing the low harmony voice. For anyone who wants them here are the lyrics:
Ner li, ner li, ner li dakik,
ba-hanuka neri adlik.
Ba-hanuka neri yair,
ba-hanuka shirim ashir.

The meaning of the words is:
I have a thin candle, a thin candle,
during the Hanukkah Holidays my candle will give light.
During the Hanukkah Holidays my candle will give light,
during the Hanukkah Holidays I shall sing songs.

I am very sorry if we are pronouncing the words wrong. My friend and I do not know Hebrew. We hope we didn't mess up the words too badly!

The pictures are from skychasers.net. They have been taken by amateurs from all over the world.
I hope you enjoy the video!

  • Hi, this song is indeed beautiful and as a native speaker of Hebrew I can tell you that it is a traditional Hebrew song which we sing during the Holiday of Hanukka. In the version you put here it is obvious that the singer(s) do not know the language and do not understand the words which are sometimes very different from the way they are pronounced here, but the voice of the singer(s) and the music are very nice nevertheless. Congratulations.

  • Thanks so much! I wasn't sure what language the song was in or where it came from, I'll try and redo it with my friend so it sounds a little bit better. I got the words originally from ear which messed up the lyrics a bit. I've always loved this song and I'm delighted to know more about it and its proper meaning/origin, thanks again!

  • PS. I have just came across two more versions of the song, if you want to hear them at you tube: one is called "Ner li" and the other one "Zach sings Ner-li".

  • Hi again, ladydoggins! I noticed a small mistake in the words I wrote you: the second line should be "ba-hanuka neri adlik" and the third one is "ba-hanuka neri yair". You can listen to the song the way it is pronounced by native speakers if you go in YouTube to "Ner li - The Handman Family Hanukkah Song", though from musical point of view your version is much better. Keep on with your good work. Good luck and all the best! Rami Saari

  • The video is very beautiful too, thank you so much!

  • PS. I have just now noticed that you and your friend are the singers. Here are the Hebrew words used originally:

Ner li, ner li, ner li dakik,

    ba-hanuka neri yair.

    Ba-hanuka neri yair,

    ba-hanuka shirim ashir.

And the meaning of the words is:

I have a thin candle, a thin candle,

during the Hanukkah Holidays my candle will give light.

During the Hanukkah Holidays my candle will give light,

during the Hanukkah Holidays I shall sing songs.
