I rebuilt a vintage reel lawn mower, and it inspired this...
In case it must be spelled out: The extreme Environmentalist abhors the technological advancement of the gas-powered lawn mower, and therefore ignores the 'evolution' of lawn mowers.
Background: Gas-powered lawnmowers are not required to meet the emissions requirements of the automobile (which have become increasingly more stringent since 1975) and therefore mowers are never equipped with a catalytic converter. Three-way catalysts control carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and nitrogen oxide to levels 99% LOWER than pre-1975 automobile exhaust. Hot-end exhaust gas from the engine enters a heat-induced reaction with the rare metals platinum, rhodium and/or paladium to achieve this. Although this is great for the earth's atmosphere, it is a 'pain in the wallet'. Car manufacturers pay near market price for these very expensive ingredients:
Platinum up to $2000/oz
Rhodium up to $7300/oz
Paladium up to $445/oz
Even aftermarket knock-offs cost well over $300. Would you pay $300 more than's today's price for your gas-powered push-mower?
@shmozia i did too!

I just watched the new Tosh.0 trailer and he said "Take that lawn mower man", so I tried it in on YouTube. I got bored. :D

Ah but catlyitic converters on cars are much bigger than they would need to be on a mower
