Looking back, I realize how much I have taken for granted. I remember when I could just be a normal teen a couple months ago. That time when I could just enjoy myself, but lately seemingly everything had been going wrong. I guess I have no place to complain. A lot of other children have it a lot worse than I do, but I figured I might as well share my story with the world.

Allow me to start from the beginning of all the chaos. Back in January of this year, I passed out apparently. I had hit my head pretty hard on the corner of my bedside table, causing it to split open. Of course, I was unconscious. I was rushed to the hospital, my sister and boyfriend right by my side. That's all I really know. The next thing I remember I was waking up from my coma three months later in April. I don't remember anything. I was just told stories. From that incident I got occasional headaches, but there wasn't much damage.

Now, a couple months ago in June, I was in a skateboarding accident. No, I don't skateboard; therefore there was an accident and a pretty bad accident as well. I don't really remember much. I heard my friend screaming and next thing I knew, I was tumbling down the street. Because I was only wearing a bikini (We were heading to the beach), I scraped nearly all the skin off my back. I also managed to hit my head pretty hard while tumbling backward. As I stood up, black clouds flooded my vision, and my ears felt like cotton balls were shoved in them. I couldn't hear and I couldn't see. I wasn't sure what was happening to me, but I knew I couldn't fall asleep. I went to the hospital again, of course. The abrasions on my back were disinfected and covered, and I was scheduled for an emergency CT scan. The scan showed nothing except a minor closed head injury, and I was sent home.

Just when I thought everything was better, a new medical problem arose. I realized as I walked, my left foot turned outward, but my knee remained forward. If I lined up my foot so it pointed straight, my left knee would completely face my right leg. Concerned, my mom took me to the hospital once again. The first doctor I saw wasn't sure what the problem was. She knew there was a problem, but she was stumped. She called me weird and sent me off to a different doctor. The new doctor was my savior. After a few simple tests, he diagnosed me with external tibial torsion, and a slight muscle weakness in my left leg. I got fitted for a leg brace, and he recommended getting a gate analysis done. I have yet to schedule that test. He also called for an MRI scan of my spinal cord, for he thinks my muscle problem might have something to do with a spinal problem. I am currently still waiting on my MRI results to confirm that suspicion.

As soon as I thought my time in the hospital was over, a new problem came up once again. I began to get dizzy spells after I started cross country pre-season. The first bad spell was when I was in the shower. The familiar black clouds returned to my vision, and next thing I know, I'm laying on the tile floor outside my shower. My sister found me on the ground, and once again I was rushed to the hospital. The doctors blamed low blood sugar and not enough rest. I stayed in the hospital for the rest of the day, and went back home later that night. After I got home, I would get dizzy when I stood up, and I would get especially dizzy when I would run. I just ignored it, and told myself it's just low blood sugar. I tried to solve the problem by drinking orange juice; lots of orange juice. I was fine for a couple days, but last night, I fainted again. I fell unconscious going down the staircase, and tumbled to the bottom. I was completely fine afterward, and I didn't bother to go to the hospital. Earlier today, my boyfriend made me go to get checked out. The doctor couldn't find a reason to blame the fainting on, so his advice was,

"A lot of people get dizzy spells. You're just going to have to learn how to deal with the problem. If you start getting other symptoms come back."

How that advice is supposed to help me, I am still trying to figure out. I just know I have to stay strong and wait out my problems. I know if I am patient, the doctors will be able to find the problem and solve it. My name is Candie Rivers, and that is my story.

  • I am so sorry... i hope it gets better... did they ever figure out what was wrong?

  • @tuckergolden888 yeah, the fainting spells are because of a nervous system disorder.. when i change position, my blood doesnt flow smoothly, cutting off blood and oxygen from my brain. and as for the foot thing, there was nothing on the mri, but the gate analysis test showed severe torsion of my tibia. the torsion is causing a lot of strain on the muscles in my leg, so im in physical therapy now, and this summer i may have to undergo major reconstructive leg surgery
