This clip brings back a spine tingling memory of escorting five wagons across Smock Prairie on the eastern flank of Mount Hood, Oregon. Morris Carter and his four daughters from Wyoming were joined by Earl Leggett, Ben Kern and Bobbie Lee in traveling the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri to Independence, Oregon during the celebration of the Sesquicentennial of the Oregon Trail in 1993. They were the only group to travel the 2,000 miles for five months at about 20 miles per day keeping very close to the original Trail. Earl Leggett hailed from Aurora, Oregon and was the only Oregonian to make that venture in 1993 with two mules and an authentic wagon loaned out by the Aurora Museum.

The section of the Oregon Trail traveled in this video taken by Ms Joie Smith of Rhododendron, Oregon is the Barlow Road which stretches about 110 miles from The Dalles to Oregon City. The video was taken on a warm late September day on an original stretch of the Barlow Road just before arriving near the White River. The "experience" was hearing the sounds of five wagons and horses following me over unimproved dirt and rocky roads. Nothing could recreate that experience today.
