The original first edition didn't have BY THE CREATOR. This was added by Darwin in the later editions (I suppose due to some kind of pressure). I don't know the details though.

Note the lack of views and comments on this series. Why? Because we still live in a society that is living in the mind of theism. When can we move past this dogma. I was astounded to see the opposition Darwin had to deal with, and then seeing the lack of views, I remembered how I live with the ignorant theists still today. How much farther could science be now if theism did not fight science tooth and nail?

Wtf? They totally ripped a line out of that quote--it was "...with its several powers, having been originally breathed BY THE CREATOR into a few forms or into one... [emphasis added]". Why would they remove "by the creator?
