Shackleton Nimrod Canberra & Seaking aircraft from RAF St Mawgan.
St Mawgan is closing as an RAF flying July 08 to be replaced by Newquay Cornwall Airport, gawd 'elp us!
Shame we didn't get the JCA based here, it was going to be, but as if by magic (plus a Scottish defence minister!) it gets earmarked for Lossie.

  • What about the several underground levels ?hahahahah Yeah the military not there anymore if you say so:)

  • @ANTISLAVEBOY Yeah got me there, these are the secret military underground levels where they faked the moon landings, the orders to assassinate JFK are kept, plus of course all the crashed UFO's (they let us fly them at weekends!). not to mention the submarine base where Captain Nemo is standing by with the Nautilus in case those pesky commies kick off again. Of course the military survival school that is (really) based there is no where near as exciting as your expert & informed stand point.

  • anybody know if there's any chance of St.Mawgan reopening as an RAF base or Naval Air Station in the not-too-distant future?

    Any info greatly appreciaed,

    Cheers, Mike

  • St Mawgan still lives on as survival training centre & will do so for many years, as for being a flying unit? Well lets see what happens when the Airport uses up all that EEC grant money ; ) hell, St Mawgan could even get the Nimrods back then : )

  • My Dad was a nav on Shacks out of Mawgan in the 60s. He was RAAF but on secondment. As a result, I was born in Cornwall :)

  • newquay airport share it now as i went there in july 2011 on a camp

  • Sorry to disagree but it was a shithole. Local population in Newquay didn't want anything to do with us during the Winter and fleeced us as though we were emmetts during the Summer. That was in the late 70s.

  • my son works there now

  • Like many of the posts that i have been reading on here , I too have fond memories of this great station from when i was a boy watching the nimrods take off - then years later returning as a serving Officer , Like much of our proud military past, this station is gone , but it will never be forgotten - Boshbear -

  • Was at St Mawgan in 1976 just a 2 week ATC thing. Remember Nimrod photos of spy trawlers, flying in a chipmunk, running with US marines, the heat and sound from a fighter taking off , someone getting arrested outside gates for taking photos. Oh and fireing a Lee Enfield 303. One thing i wont forget is the Burns on the inside of a hanger door because a searchlight was switched on inside.

  • nimrodAcoffin ?

  • RAF St. Mawgan was a Legandary base station at Cornwall. And now she does not have the main runway. but she is only a base or a RAF outpost but her memories will go on for ever.............
