1954 Field Marshall Single Cyclinder Tractor Serial number 16708. Series 3A Finished in Fowler Orange. Made by Marshall and Sons or Gainsborough Lincolnshire. Engine a two stroke diesel produces 40HP from a 6.5inch cylinder with a 9inch stroke, 4895cc the piston runs horizontally beneath the radiators with the head just visible above the front axle through the square opening.
Tractor started by using a decompression valve in the head connected to a thread on the fly wheel via a roller. A smouldering starter paper is placed in the holder and inserted into the cylinder head. This provides a temperature difference (similar to a glow plug in a modern day diesel) The engine is turned over by means of a starting handle and once the roller drops of the thread the engine is on full compression and the momentum of the fly is enough to carry it over top dead centre and thus the engine fires.
Seen here in the working tractor section of GDSF 2009.
Does this one have the cartridge starter breech?

Yes I refurbished it as it was somewhat rotten and rusty. I have never started the tractor with a cartridge as the initial shock can cause wear overtime to the small end.
