Kohut's final speech, "Reflections on Empathy", was given at the 1981 Self Psychology conference in Berkeley, California. He was aware he was dying, and at the conclusion of his speech he announced his final farewell. This is a Lifespan Learning Institute video.

  • I can totally relate to the suffering of having a mother who lacks personality. Another way to say this might be to say a mother who lacks person-hood, desire, passion, soul...things that give shape to one's personality. But, how does one even begin to deal with the damage that this does? How does one create a known, loveable self where there isn't one?

You might be interested in the International association for psychoanalytic self psychology (IAPSP) which is holding an important annual conference, usually in october. There you will find alive the spirit of self psychology and its continuous developments. There might also be a local chapter of self psychologists in your area. I'm pleased to hear that Kohut has touched you deeply. The attitude of deep and sustained empathy he is advocating has also been a revelation in my life !

  • Brilliant. I wish there were more readily available Kohut videos on here.

  • @love2live2learn Dear Learn., Thanks for your message. . There are lots of nice things on the Internet and on and on its subsidiary device You-Tube, that are free to all. Things made available to anyone interested. . We live in a Material world but the Material world fits into the Real world. The Real world is full of wonderous things that pass time while we are here for our duration. . There are more nice people in the world than there are people selling things. . . Cheers. from, del-boy.

  • @Dddddorian Maybe we could just agree some things simply smack of inconsistency, like using two mediums set up for the free distribution of information- YouTube and the internet, to sell information.

  • @Dddddorian In light of all the attention that the subject of empathy has received lately, from the President of the United States to researchers such as Simon Baron-Cohen at Cambridge, I submit to you that what you're defending by your statement is akin to justifying the charging of a fee to inform passengers on an airline, which direction the emergency exit doors are.

    Dear Leana2.,

Well, no, it would only be ''immoral'' to do that to a patient.

To do that in this context, of running a learning program for psychoanalysts or psychiatrists, is not immoral just business.

Dr. Kohut's Estate has to make a living, too you know !

    .

    .

    Cheers.

  • Sweet old guy ;p totally stupid and slightly mad, but it's impossible not to like him just the way he is

  • Self psychology therapists cant look the right point usually. They cant understand what Kohut wants to say to the world. His theories is not only about theraphy , also about life. About existence or god. If someone wants talk about kohut, empathy, self, life or theories, please send PM to me.Thanks for reading.
