Tom Schick, International Rescue Committee (IRC) board member and executive vice president for Corporate Affairs and Communications for the American Express Company, recalls an unexpected encounter with a taxi driver that made a profound impression on him. Find out how the gratitude of a recently resettled refugee provided Tom with his most memorable IRC experience.

For over 75 years, the International Rescue Committee has been responding to the world's worst crises. Meet some of our extended family: dedicated IRC staff members who tackle enormous challenges to change lives; courageous refugees we've led through their journeys from harm to home; and committed leaders, thinkers and supporters who help us protect human freedom and dignity. www.theIRC.org

  • Thanks, Causecast -- we often hear about refugees who would like to "give back" in some way for the support they've received from the IRC and their local communities as they work to rebuild their lives. Some even become IRC volunteers, staff members and donors.

  • Wow, this story was really wonderful. It must have taken a lot for that man to want to refuse such payment. Thank you for sharing your story with us.
