Alex Chilton (1950-2010) was a singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer from Memphis, TN. He was influenced by The Beatles at the age of 13. Three years later in 1967 he joined the Memphis white soul group The Box Tops as their lead singer. The group had a number one hit with the Wayne Carson Thompson song "The Letter". The Box Tops had several follow up hits including "Cry Like A Baby", "Choo Choo Train" and "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March". After The Box Tops disbanded he formed the power pop group Big Star in 1971 along with Chris Bell, Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel. Big Star released two albums in 1972 & 1974. They were released on Ardent Records, and offshoot of Stax. The albums received limited distribution by Stax. In 1974 Columbia Records took over control of the Stax catalog and a third recorded album never saw the light of day. The group broke up later that year and co-founder Chris Bell died in an auto accident. Chilton pursued a solo career. In 1993 Big Star regrouped and are still together. The current members are Chilton and Stephens as well as Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow both late of The Posies. Chilton has also participated in reuniting with The Box Tops for performances. Several bands such as R.E.M., Cheap Trick, and The Replacements have cited the two Big Star albums (#1 Record and Radio City) as influences. The Replacements recorded a song "Alex Chilton" on their 1987 album "Pleased To Meet Me" in honor of him. Big Star are now regarded as the Godfathers of the Indie rock movement. They recorded a CD in 2005 "In Space"
