The magnificant monarch butterfly is the world's most spectacular migrating insect. Science has yet to explain how each fall monarchs fly from the northeastern US and Canada to the groves in Mexico where their grandparents overwintered the previous year. The monarch has very tough wings, as evidenced by this speciment that was caught in a spider's web outside my office window. I released the butterfly after the spider attacked. It dropped to the ground, perched on some grass to rest and then resumed its flight.

  • I would have saved the butterfly. Not watch it get killed by that spider.

  • That's interesting that the butterfly survived, I wouldn't expect that usually.
