What the...? You claim to believe in the Star Trek philosophy of world unity and putting differences aside and yet you just went on to bash Americans. You dont know every single American and therefore you cannot rationally pass judgement on every single one of us. And need I remind you that Roddenberry was American and he definetly was not 'stupid'.

Bravo Scienceorc BRAVO!!!! That what Star Trek is really about, I am a huge fan of the series and let me assure you that I understand the Star Trek philosophy completely. Don't mind this stupid Americans, they were stupid and they will always be :-) Lets hope that by the 24th century we will evolve like in Star Trek. Live Long and Prosper _\\//

All of you shut up! none of you idiots will ever understand what star trek is all about! Star Trek portrays a future where humanity puts aside it's differences and forms one unified species. It represents the end of blind nationalism and the beginning of a better world where we work together for the common good. It always used to give me hope for the future. But it's hard to feel that hope when people like you spam the internet with hate.

Gene Roddenberry was open minded, that's why. The news writers are not, they are the "America, Fuck yeah!" kind of people.

If that were the case, then why would Roddenberry positively portray the Russians (Pavel Chekov ) and make Chekov a major character and representation of Russian culture despite the network's attacks? Why would he represent every other nation on Earth? The show was made in the Cold War. You must understand that for it's time, it was insanely ballzy to even suggest Russians were good people on American Television. That said, I won't defend this intro...

Star Trek was constrained by its American audience and its network producers. Its main characters adhere to systems of morality and politics designed to appeal to 20th century Western viewers. But *during the space race* it had a Russian in an important, contributing role and an unaccented man of Japanese descent playing one of the best pilots of his generation. And over time it has shown the resolution of conflict with enemy powers who only represent the other until we understand them better.

But there are a few things that should be sorted out. First, the Federation is more properly compared to the UN than to the US. And while it has mistrustful, hostile relations with interstellar powers, powers which do practice forms of governance and social structures somewhat associated with the Chinese and the Soviets, over time it works to resolve these conflicts. And the show's famous Prime Directive is entirely about avoiding cultural imperialism.

You're right that Star Trek has a Western perspective. It uses the trappings of American/British naval convention, among other things, to appeal to the patriotism of Americans and to bring them to identify with the Federation. And the Federation is largely founded on Western ideals and concepts like natural rights and democracy.

I dont care what most trekkies think, I think this is a brilliant intro, brilliant song, and brilliant montage of all the past ships which carried the name Enterprise
