"'Round Midnight" is a 1944 jazz standard by jazz musician Thelonious Monk. Jazz artists Cootie Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis have further embellished the song, with songwriter Bernie Hanighen adding lyrics. Both Williams and Hanighen have received co-credits for their contributions. His compositions and improvisations are full of dissonant harmonies and angular melodic twists, and are impossible to separate from Monk's unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of silences and hesitations; a style nicknamed "Melodious Thunk" by his wife Nellie. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Filled with advanced harmonies and rhythms for the time, it became a signature piece for Thelonious. With its many convoluting themes and changes, Dr. Kopplin introduces this work as a showcase for the voice as a musical instrument. Star vocalist, singer/songwriter, Paul Anka Award winner Candice Brown performs this mysterious and eerie chart. Navigating through the shoals (a little Pirates humor) Dr. Kopplin pulls the ship through to a successful end. You will see and hear the Challenges facing Candice, Capn Craig Tsurumoto (bass), Jeanette Jeena E Lawler (drums), and The Band as they wind their way through this Chart.
With all the Space created by all the afore-mentioned silences and hesitations, the delicate nature of this piece becomes apparent. Candice Browns talent for pitch and timing controls the tiller as each section provokes the other for attention and a response. Compare this to the Cal Poly Jazz Band - Candice Brown-I Remember You Video and you will appreciate the Versatility of Candice Brown.

The Spring 09 show brings yet another ambitious Dr. Kopplin set of Charts. Dont miss the best SoCal Jazz show for 7 Bucks (yes, thats right, only 7 bucks). Just raised to 10 bucks - still cheap! And better than some of those lousy chick flicks with ------- fill in the blanks. Try spending that in Downtown LA! Be There or Be Square!

Ed. Note: As I was framing out the newer videos, I received an email from a famous "anonymous" - my term - who had viewed the Cal Poly Jazz Band - UNC Greeley Jazz Festival - Skylark post. She praised Candice Brown's performance by writing that it reminded her of Dinah Shore singing of that when they both were performing at West Hollywood club that week. WOW, to think that someone that noteworthy watched a video from this little Channel is, well, mind-blowing. Anyway, if you read this, take time to see the video she is commenting on. Thank you.

  • What I wouldn't give to have a great female singer for my Jazz ensemble; especially one as pretty as her.

We're from So Cal too! PM me if anyone ever wants to play.

  • i recently watched the MJ documentary, This is It. During the auditions, All the directors agreed to open it up to the World, but knew that MOST of the talent would come from LA-SoCal. So there you are!

  • bravo!

  • Your videos are an impetus for her. She has been viewing your posts for new charts to do. BTW, I believe that she and the combo may be playing Oct 13 on Sunset, I'll keep you posted.
