Luis Surez was handed an 8 match ban and fined 40, 000 pounds for repeatedly racially abusing Manchester United player Patrice Evra. Luis Suarez denies making racially offensive remarks and vows to clear his name.
Many of the Liverpool fans believe that Evra made the claims because Suarez gave him a torrid time on the pitch and that Evra was left in a bad position as he could not retract the claims he made to a French newspaper.
Suarez admits he did use a name that may cause some offense to Evra but it is a name used by his own Manchester United team mates.
All this is a blow to the Football Associations campaign to rid football of its racist image and is a slap in the face of the Kick racism out of football campaign.
For their part, the Liverpool FC people are backing Suarez, citing his own mixed race credentials and that his native Uruguay is a racially mixed team and so there is no way that Suarez would be racist. Evra on the other hand is adamant that Suarez abused him with racial insults more than ten times in the game.
If that wasn't bad enough, The England and Chelsea captain John Terry will face criminal charges over allegations that he racially abused the Queen's Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.
Let's hope this mess is sorted soon and that racial harmony is restored to the beautiful game. If for no other reason than to stop those moaning Liverpool fans whingeing on.
For a role model of real racial harmony, we could take lessons from the good people of Jamaica.
