Kempff performs his own skittish little composition 'Libellen über dem froschteich' showing that he could sometimes be a playful artist. The title translates into English as 'Dragonflies over the frogpond' - hm! The performance dates from 1953.

  • I wonder why are both the frog pond and the dragonflies so mysterious

  • Kempff was one of those rare virtuosi whose gifts of heart and mind far outweighed his manual dexterity. And his manual dexterity wasn't all that bad, either! A charming little piece for an encore.

  • Kempff left behind a wealth of recordings of the standard repetoire . It,s good to hear him play something informal like this , I think he was modest about his great talents........

  • ...nice,but pretty prussian dragonflies over a pretty prussian lake, perhaps those near potsdam, hehe!

    regards

  • Humph, not entirely unexpuct, nobody who plays Boathaven Snortas or his first concerto could be Humorlos. However, the "mit humor" here is raising my spirit levels(!): I think Frogs,(and not only French ones, but German too) prefer croaking at and snapping Dragonflies! What a delightful delicate touch; this would make a fantastic encore to mystify even the most knowledgeable pianophile.
